 Weatherization measures designed and installed for over 1,000 mid-century windows as part of Brown’s Dorm Energy Efficiency Project’s (DEEP).

The Challenge

The original 1951 double hung window systems at 9 dormitories in Brown’s Wriston Quad were starting to show wear and tear causing air leakage and energy loss. Replacing the window systems, a major capital project with a poor ROI, was not an option.

The near constant occupancy of the dorms presented an operational challenge – as soon the students leave in May, summer programs start filtering onto campus – leaving a narrow timeframe for installation.

The Solution

B|E designed a cost-effective solution; installation of weatherization measures at over 1,000 double hung window systems. The design proved to be an extremely effective part of the pilot project installed at Diman House, beating the project’s energy saving projections. This unique design included fixing in place the upper sash of the windows, which eliminated maintenance problems with the failing balance systems. Weather stripping and caulk was used to reduce infiltration at the operable lower sash and at the window casings.

B|E’s on-site project manager and in-house installation team completed each building on-time and hassle-free, demonstrating the flexibility and reliability to perform on a tight schedule.
